The Scorpius Syndrome – Book Two
**advance reader copy received via NetGalley**
“Forming couples?” Vinnie looked at the rather famous scientist over her cheap coffee mug. “That’s what we’re calling it?” Lynne smiled, her green eyes sparkling. “Sounds better than hooking up with wild, dangerous, deadly men in this post-apocalyptic hell we’re all living in.” – Shadow Falling by Rebecca Zanetti
The second book in Rebecca Zanetti’s Scorpius Syndrome series was just engaging as the first novel. Some books I can drop and come back to, interest waxing and waning gently, but the story of Vinnie and Raze had me entranced from the start. This post-apocalyptic world that the author has built is very edgy and dark; fans of The Walking Dead could relate…except in this case some of the walkers are functioning at very scary levels. The effects of Scorpius on those who have been exposed is still emerging, along with difficult societal and survival situations for those who are left to pick up the pieces.
Shadow Falling’s entire tale seems to burn through the length of a few days, at the most weeks, but the story does not suffer at all for such a short time frame. This is no Victorian era historical novel. This is a story that grabs you and runs with you. The author pumps detail into each page, threading surprises throughout the plot and kick-starting the action to keep the blood pumping. The heat between the broken Vinnie and secretive Raze is off the charts, and their fight to maintain distance sweetens the interaction between the two. Readers will want to peel away the layers of Raze and follow Vinnie down the Scorpius rabbit hole.
While I think the story stands alone just fine, I totally recommend reading the first book. It is an awesome read, but I think it will also help you appreciate the complexities and personalities of characters that appeared in the first book. The series is definitely good enough for an investment for the fans of romance with an apocalyptic flair that touches on some of the deeper facets of mankind. Love the series, love the author, and loved this read. The release date is 30 August 2016, but you are going to want to pre-order this puppy so you do not forget.
