My Review: This review covers parts 1-3 of the four-part e-serial of Donna Grant’s Smoke and Fire, a Dark Kings novel, which I received advance reader copies of through NetGalley. Fans of the series will not be disappointed with Ryder and Kinsey’s story, but I prefer to read the entire story in one piece rather than receiving it in parts. In the first part, Kinsey and Ryder become reacquainted after three years on ice thanks to Ryder’s walking out without a backward glance. I found Kinsey’s character to be relatable and understandably rigid toward Ryder in the beginning, but I also felt that she was pretty closed to accepting the dragons of Dreagan. What is really interesting in the first part of the book is the back story cooking with the Dark and Light Fae and machinations courtesy of Ulrik. The second part of the story brought Kinsey down a little in my eyes – she seems to be taking a lot of the negativity to heart and downplaying her own value in comparison to Ryder. The dark tones and desperation in Kinsey’s narrative pick up as she struggles with the dwindling possibility of proving her innocence and resisting Ryder. The third part in the e-serial release heats up as Ryder and Kinsey go head-to-head and Ulrik begins to gain momentum. At this point I almost feel that the background story is starting to consume the primary tale, and I need to know what Ulrik is up to! I am looking forward to finding out what happens at the end of this book, and where the author is going with the series.  Readers can find the e-serials available now for purchase, but the full novel comes out on 5 April 2016.
