“I’d like to offer you a job.” He couldn’t have shocked Jace more if he’d said,” I’d like to set you on fire for a ritual sacrifice.” – The Undoing by Shelly Laurenston
Publisher’s Summary: No one would ever accuse Jace Berisha of having an easy life–considering her husband…you know…killed her. But that was then! Now she fights for mighty Viking gods with the spectacular and vicious Crows.
But things are turning very bad, very quickly because a vengeful, ancient goddess has come into the world with just one thing on her mind–ending it. And the only way they can hope to stop her is if the Crows join forces with their one-time enemies, the Protectors. A Viking Clan created to do nothing but kill every Crow they see.
Thankfully, Protector Ski Eriksen is a peace loving kind of guy. Because the woman he is desperately trying to get close to is the beautiful and not-very-chatty Jace. Battling Nordic clans? Unkillable goddesses? Jace’s mean-spirited dog? None of these things would ever get in the way of a true Viking!
My Review: The second book in Laurenston’s Call of Crows series is just as deliciously wonderful as the first, with the same touch of paranormal insanity that we have come to know and love from her work as G.A. Aiken. Not only does Laurenston do amazing things with her wordcraft, she has built an amazingly multilayered mythological world in this series. Not only does she touch on several different mythological pantheons, but she also recognizes many cultures from around the world. Her characters are all definitely insane, but it’s an insanity that I can get on board with! This book focuses on the L.A. Crow berserker, Jace Berisha, and Protector Ski Eriksen. Not only are the Crows confronted with another impending Apocalypse, but Jace’s murdering ex-husband seems intent on reacquiring the wife he killed. Jace is not interested in a relationship with Ski, but necessity leads him to encourage her to help the Protectors out. The problem is, once he has her working with them, he is not sure he wants her to leave… This was such a fun, action-filled story, with everything you could hope for from the author of the Dragon Kin series.
“He looked directly a Rundstom and snarled,” Thank you for saving my life.” The Raven stared at Ski a moment before bellowing,” Now you owe your soul to me!” – The Undoing by Shelly Laurenston
